Acupuncture and In Vitro Fertilization

acupuncture and pregnancyA 2007 study by Craig et al claimed acupuncture reduced live birth rates when performed on the embryo transfer day. Researchers from Oregon College of Oriental Medicine wanted to test this result with a chart review study, which was later published in the Journal of Alternative Complementary Medicine. According to the chart review, acupuncture does not reduce the chance of pregnancy or live birth and may, in some cases, actually increase the chances of live birth.

For the sake of the study, researchers pulled charts for patients received reproductive assistance at one private clinic. Clinic files did not show lower live birth rates during IVF. Higher live birth rates were noted in patients who received acupuncture during donor cycles.

Conclusion: Due to the fact that one private clinic was used as the sole source of patient records, additional studies are needed to support this study’s results, but preliminary findings suggest acupuncture does not lower chances of pregnancy when performed on embryo transfer day.
